Iain in front of canolaWho I am: a new farmer

I am just a small town guy who moved to the city. I actually grew up in a farming community called Lindsay, Ontario.  The area has now become a city called the City of Kawartha Lakes. I have always had a love for farming. When I was young I used to tell my mom that, “I was going to be a farmer.” I realize now that when I was young I had no idea about how much work goes into farming, yet, I find myself wanting to farm despite that fact. It is this want to farm which has led me to create this website.

I date a farmer’s daughter whom I have been with since 2004. We met in high school strangely enough, but didn’t start dating until our second year of university.

I often help her family out on her family’s farm.  They work  about 150 acres. When I started helping her family out, I thought nothing of it.  It wasn’t until after some time that I realized that I really enjoyed the farm life, and was considering trying it out.

Timeline?

I have a timeline in place that will put me on a farm for one growing season, to see if I can farm for real. I intend to  document my farming journey as I help out on the farm.   Many of the things that I am going to learn about and research,  will be things that I  need to know.  I will share what I learn here on My Farm Education for everyone. I am sure that there some things that you will already know and others that you won’t.

Here is a quick video that explains the transition plan.

Job life

I went to school at Laurentian University in Sudbury, Ontario. I took Sport and Physical Education and I loved it.  However, I didn’t become physical education teacher as I intended. Instead I became an  English as a second language teacher who teaches government employees. It isn’t where I thought I would be, but I like the job.
